Embracing Eco-Luxury

We are committed to demonstrating that environmental stewardship and luxurious hospitality can coexist, offering our guests a five-star experience that is both green and grand.

For years, organic chefs have illustrated the possibility of savoring delectable, health-conscious cuisine. Floating Leaf is extending this philosophy to the hospitality sector, delivering unparalleled luxury in an eco-friendly setting. We believe that indulgence and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive, and we invite others to join us on this sustainable journey.

Our Eco Philosophy

At Floating Leaf, every choice, from the selection of building materials to our culinary offerings, is made with a deep respect for local traditions and a commitment to minimizing our environmental footprint. We adhere to stringent sustainability policies to honor the community and the planet.

In the current climate, sustainability is imperative for all construction endeavors, particularly in Bali. At Floating Leaf, we’ve assembled a team of experts to guide our eco-conscious decisions, ensuring durability, safety, and environmental integrity. Our approach blends traditional Balinese wisdom with cutting-edge technology, creating a green sanctuary that exemplifies responsible living.

We strive for excellence and empower our staff and guests to actively contribute to the well-being of their communities and the environment. Through our proactive environmental initiatives, ‘green’ training programs, and encouragement of eco-friendly practices, we foster a culture of sustainability.

Being a genuine eco-hotel transcends basic energy conservation or offering non-smoking rooms. Here’s a glimpse into our comprehensive eco-friendly practices:

  • Environmentally friendly towel and sheet re-use program
  • Luxurious, Volatile organic compound (VOC)-free cotton towels and sheets – for better air quality and to provide the luxury feel
  • Selection of hypoallergenic furnishings and cleaning products
  • Bulk dispensers for soap and other consumables – reduces wasteful packaging
  • Hotel recycling bins make recycling easy and convenient
  • Solar charging stations for electronics
  • Organic permaculture garden and compost systems

Organic Garden-to-Table Farming

At Floating Leaf, our Permaculture Garden is a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship, community support, and nutritious food production. Here’s how we achieve this:

  • Holistic Wellness Connection: Beyond the human-environmental link, our wellness retreats encourage self-regulation and meaningful interactions. Guests have the opportunity to connect with others they might not encounter in their daily lives.
  • Organic Food Cultivation: We’ve dedicated a portion of our property to a permaculture garden. Strictly organic, we grow nutrient-rich food for our guests while minimizing our environmental impact. Solar power, greywater reuse, and recycling contribute to our low carbon footprint.
  • Permaculture Classes: Guests can participate in permaculture gardening classes and even handpick ingredients for their meals. It’s a hands-on experience that fosters appreciation for sustainable food practices.
  • Supporting Local Farmers: Many Balinese farmers face challenges due to changing environments. We subsidize local farmers, allowing them to maintain traditional, eco-friendly agricultural methods. Our goal is to produce healthy food without harming the environment.

Eco Design and Construction

Our buildings at Floating Leaf are meticulously designed to harmonize with nature. Here’s how we achieve eco-conscious construction:

  • Site Testing and Optimization: Rigorous testing—soil analysis, water assessment, wind patterns, sun exposure, and energy conservation—guides our construction decisions. We’ve engineered structures to withstand earthquakes, harness solar energy, and maximize natural ventilation.
  • Living Green Walls and Roofs: Taking science further, we’ve incorporated living green walls and roofs. These lush plantings not only shield rooms from Bali’s heat but also capture rainwater, reducing our energy needs for cooling.

Other Community Initiatives

Round structures offer several advantages, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability:

  • Material Efficiency: Circular rooms use 15% to 30% less flooring, wall, and roofing materials compared to their square or rectangular counterparts
  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: Improved airflow in round dwellings reduces the need for heating and cooling. By eliminating right angles, we’ve significantly reduced our eco-footprint while creating more usable living space.
  • Passive Cooling: The reduced exterior surface area in contact with the elements enhances passive cooling. Plus, the durability of these structures is improved.

We’ve transformed reclaimed materials into functional and beautiful elements throughout Floating Leaf:

  • Recycled Terrazzo: Guestrooms and the main lobby feature recycled terrazzo flooring and tabletops
  • Reclaimed Teak Wood: Air conditioner installations and toilet paper holders use 100% reclaimed teak wood.
  • Recycled Pebblewash: Bathroom floors and select hallways showcase recycled pebblewash.
  • Handmade Recycled Elements: From bathroom sinks to shelves and bathtubs, we’ve crafted these essentials from recycled materials.
  • Local Stoneware: Our formal dining ware is meticulously crafted from locally sourced stoneware by Balinese artisans.
  • Upcycled Furniture: Colorful chairs, stools, cabinets, tables, and benches are repurposed from retired fishing boats, giving them a new lease on life.

Our water conservation efforts extend beyond the ordinary:

  • Self-Sufficiency: We use rainwater harvesting systems, ensuring that not a drop is taken away from local farmers and no dirty water harms the environment.
  • Healing Pool: Our saltwater pool operates naturally, and even the backwash—usually wasted—is filtered and reused for vehicle washing and grounds maintenance. Some water supports local farmers’ irrigation needs.
  • Low-Flow Fixtures: High water pressure is maintained while conserving water through low-flow sinks, showers, and special toilets.
  • Old Coconut Beams: The massive beams supporting Floating Leaf’s iconic roof are made from “old coconut” wood. This ensures that the tree has fulfilled its purpose and will no longer produce coconuts, respecting Balinese food sources.

  • Organic Bath Products:
Each guest enjoys high-quality, biodegradable bath products thoughtfully packaged in reusable ceramic containers.
Our creams, tinctures, oils, and spa treatments use 100% organic, all-natural ingredients. These time-tested recipes have been passed down through generations.
  • Eco-Friendly Tableware
Some of our cups and plates are ingeniously grown from corn and other plants. These organically processed materials mimic strong plastics but remain all-natural, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly.

  • Composting: Leftover food, paper, and cardboard are composted for our organic gardens.
  • Strand Woven Bamboo: The Sanctuary’s floor and lights feature strand woven bamboo—an incredibly sustainable material that rivals hardwood in durability.
  • Eco-Friendly Paints: We exclusively use eco-friendly paints.
  • Plastic-Free Straws: Say goodbye to plastic—our straws are made from bamboo.
