These original inhabitants of Bali fled imperialistic invaders, eventually finding refuge in the solitude of Bali’s remote mountains. Today, only two villages remain, which until recently, were firmly and purposefully shut off from the rest of the world. The main temple in the village dates back to the 10 century AD (833 Caka) but the village itself is said to be much older than the temple.

Healers & Ceremonies
Among the most profound and enlightening experiences as expressed by our yoga and wellness retreat participants is a session with a Balinese traditional healer. As sessions with a Balian is much like seeing a doctor and is very personalized based on the need of the individual, we ask that you contact us with your inquiry and desire so that we can craft a package appropriate for you and your needs.
The Balinese Balian
The Balian (healer)
Healers in Bali are called Balian. We have worked with dozens of Balians and healers in Bali over the last couple decades and have found a handful of what we feel are the most exceptional and gifted for a variety of treatments. We can schedule you with particular healers that excel in a modality that may benefit you. We must be discrete and discerning about the healers personal information and location as their primary duty is to their community.
Four Types of Balians
The first kind is a Ketakson who acts as a channel between the client and God. The Pica/Paica Balian is a medium who may not be a formal student of magic. This kind of Balian receives physical objects which appear and disappear spontaneously and are used during healing sessions. The Balian Usada is a person who either has the intention to become a Balian or may receive divine knowledge during a severe illness. The fourth kind of Balian combines all of the above. Many may appear crazy or psychotic, or hear voices, while the wisdom in entering them.
Please note that some activities may have a required minimum number of participants. Please contact us at
co*******@ba***************.com
for more information.
The Bali Healer Methodology
First, will be an initial meeting in which the healer will engage a range of techniques to ascertain the well being, imbalances and possibly past lives of the individual. He will study the person’s name, palm and aura. The Balian then enters a trance state and invites Naga (The Balinese Dragon Spirit) to enter him. In a few minutes time, the Balian will share his findings. He may be able to derive significant life events, traumas, past lives, future events, warnings, etc. Many Balinese healers have the ability to derive this type of information. What sets the gifted Balian apart is the offering of a cure or direction; a prescription, if you will.
The Balian explains that he must reveal exactly what is revealed to him and he will not sugarcoat it. Certainly not all of his readings reveal undesirable aspects, in fact many are optimistic, but some recipients may not be prepared to learn what may be transmitted.
Please note that some activities may have a required minimum number of participants. Please contact us at
co*******@ba***************.com
for more information.
The Malukat Purification Ritual
One possible initial prescription may be a Melukat ritual. A Melukat is a spiritual cleansing ritual and part of the Manusa Yadnya (Balinese Hindu life events). Its purpose is to purify a human body and soul. It is said to wash away turmoil and sickness acquired from negative karma in both this life (prarabda karmaphala) and past lives (sancita karmaphala).
In order to purify the aura and karma from past lives, align and clear the chakras, and remove disease, Balian Taksu will invite the individual back for an evening Melukat on an auspicious day such as Kajeng Kliwon (a day in the Balinese calendar which is believed to have magical power), purnama (full moon), tilem (new moon), or a variety of others.
If it is decided that further purification is necessary, the Balian may prescribe a more intensive Melukat ritual that will take place at a confluence of rivers and waterfalls
The suggestion of a Balian, Mangku or other traditional Balinese healer to undertake a Melukat is very much like a prescription written by a western doctor. A couple of our yoga and wellness retreat participants were disappointed that they were not asked to partake in the Melukat. Just as a doctor would only prescribe antibiotics for a person with a bacterial infection, a true Balinese healer would only suggest a Melukat for those in need.

for more information.
The Community is Priority
A Balian’s primary obligation is that to his banjar or local village. He or she must tend to them first and foremost. In today’s ‘Eat, Pray, Love blogging world’, some traditional Bali healers become hyped and promoted with or without their blessing. Sadly, this happened too many times. Several years ago a Balinese healer sat in his small compound offering sessions to his neighbors, a film crew happened upon him, put him in a film, and now there are tourist busses lined up outside his home. He can no longer effectively see to the health and wellbeing of his village. We don’t want to see that happen again, so we will not print the name or location of our authentic and remarkable balian.

Bali Charity Trek
One of our most rewarding excursions is a trek in the Muntigunung region of Bali. In cooperation with our favorite Balinese charity, Muntigunung Community Social Enterprise, we offer a beautiful and enlightening trek through this remote area in northeast Bali.
Muntigunung Charity Trek
Historically, the members of the community fought an insurmountable battle with the eight-month dry season. Retrace the steps of the women in Muntigunung, who for centuries have walked over 15 km daily, up and down perilous cliffs to gather and haul water back to their communities. We won’t scale the cliffs as they did, but we will see them. We begin the trek high on a ridge overlooking Holy Mt. Agung, the volcanic lakes, and the Bali Sea.
We will have a tropical breakfast at the summit of Lake Batur’s volcanic caldera and head down to the plains of the north coast. Your knowledgeable local guide will escort you back to her village. It is here where you will witness all the good the charity has been able to accomplish.
Learn about how water-catchment buildings have helped empower the women and enable them to provide for their families. Instead of the dangerous daily water runs, the women and their families can gather under the water catchment building, benefit from education, spend time together, create beautiful crafts and ultimately have the time and energy to make a living and lift themselves out of poverty.
The Balinese are an immensely proud and resourceful culture and would only resort to begging if it were a last option. Sadly, this is what needed to happen to survive and the good people of the villages, often times along with their babies, ventured to tourist areas to seek help.
This is when a Swiss backed NGO stepped in to assist with construction of several buildings that feature spacious roofs that collect and store rainwater to provide a perennial water supply. These expansive roofs also offer a cool and comfortable a space for the residents to create crafts and process crops such as cashew nuts and rosella/hibiscus.
The goods are then sold to provide a well-earned income that the villagers can be proud of. It also keeps the families together, allows the children to attend school, and ensures the strong traditions of the community can continue as it has for thousands of years.
Donations are not accepted, but as we visit several villages and charity projects, you will have the opportunity to purchase the goods made by these endearing and welcoming people. Its immensely rewarding for all involved and we end up at a nice beachfront hotel for a lunch before heading back to Floating Leaf Eco-Luxury Retreat. The trek is picturesque, educational, deeply rewarding and directly benefits the people and communities in need in a sustainable way.
This Bali charity trek is approximately 7 hours long. Participants should be reasonably fit and able to walk up and down inclines for extended periods.
Inclusions: breakfast, drinking water, lunch at a lovely seaside hotel (bring your swimsuit), round-trip transport to and from Floating Leaf Eco-Luxury Retreat and guides.
Sturdy footwear, a hat, and an open heart are recommended.
“The greatest and most rewarding travel experience of our lives.”
– Jess Sandilands and Joe Nicholls, Lord Commander
Bali Shopping Tour
You might be surprised to realize that Bali’s not only a paradise for surfers, yoga practitioners and raw food-lovers. Nope, it’s also a fantastic place to purchase handicrafts, textiles, and art. There’s a very high level of skill among the Balinese. Prices are very reasonable by Western standards and years of tourism have given designers and producers a stylish sensibility.
