At Floating Leaf, we believe in giving back—to the people of Bali and to our precious environment.
As an eco-retreat, our commitment extends beyond providing exceptional experiences for our guests. Here’s how we make a difference, and how you can join us:
Local Community Support
We’re deeply invested in improving the lives of our neighbors in Sukawati Village. But it’s not about what we think they need—it’s about listening to their wants and needs. Here’s how we contribute:
- Education – We offer free classes in yoga, English, sustainable agriculture, and permaculture to the friendly people of our village and all Balinese.
- Organic Farming Subsidies – We support local farmers, enabling them to grow organic, nutrient-rich food without harmful chemicals.
- Sustainable Living Education – Through programs and real-life examples, we promote sustainable practices within our local community and beyond.
- Donation Programs – Our events provide tangible assistance for crucial community needs, reaching villages across Bali.
- Eco-Tourism – We actively conserve natural resources and divert waste from overflowing landfills.
The Greenest Village Project
In 2016, we launched this community outreach program, and it has since become our most successful initiative, spanning the entire island. Tackling waste challenges on a tropical island is no small feat. Here’s how The Greenest Village Program makes a difference:
- Recycling and Waste Collection Bins: We strategically place these throughout the village.
- Reliable Waste Management and Recycling: Ensuring sustainable waste collection and recycling practices.
- Beach Clean-Up Days: Taking action to keep our shores pristine.
- Educational Programs: We offer green practice workshops for all who want to learn.
- Cash Rewards for Participation: Villagers receive incentives for collecting trash and recyclables.
- Program Expansion: Any village can join the competition.
- Prizes and Recognition: Celebrating the winners who champion sustainability.
Join us in making a positive impact. Together, we can create a better future for Bali and beyond. You can learn more about the Greenest Village Project here.
Other Community Initiatives
Charity Partner-Muntigunung Community Social Enterprise
In Muntigunung, an area plagued by an extreme 8-month dry season, impoverished villagers struggle to grow enough crops for survival. With the influx of tourism, some have even resorted to begging in Ubud and the bustling beach resort of Kuta.
To create a sustainable future, a Swiss-backed NGO stepped in. They constructed 11 buildings with expansive roofs, designed to collect and store rainwater in specially crafted tanks—ensuring a year-round water supply.
These roofs serve a dual purpose: not only do they provide water, but they also offer space for villagers to create handicrafts and process crops like rosella tea and cashew nuts. These products find their way to large hotels on the south coast.
Clean Community Initiative (CCI)
Waste disposal poses a significant challenge on the tiny island of Bali. Without proper sanitation services, garbage often ends up by the roadside or, worse, gets burned. Our mission is twofold: educate the community on proper waste disposal and recycling practices, and provide essential infrastructure to make it possible. Here’s how we’re making a difference:
Centralized Cement Garbage Receptacles: Floating Leaf is constructing large centralized receptacles. These sturdy containers will serve over 40 families each, ensuring efficient waste management.
Maintenance and Emptying: We take responsibility for maintaining and emptying these receptacles, keeping our surroundings clean.
Growing Our Footprint: Our goal is to build as many receptacles as possible, and we invite your support to expand our impact.
Free English Classes for Children
We’re delighted to offer free English as a second language courses for all Indonesian children. Preparing children for the future is a top priority. These classes are not only educational but also fun, and the smiles on the kids’ faces are our greatest reward.
