Our Values

Who we are, what we believe and the values that bind us together.

The Bali Tri Hita Karana

Floating Leaf’s approach is deeply rooted in the Balinese Hindu doctrine of Tri Hita Karana. This Sanskrit term translates to “three paths to peacefulness and prosperity.” It revolves around three harmonious relationships, the balance between humans and God, between humans and other humans, and the equilibrium of man and nature. It teaches us:

The Gods graciously gave us life and have created nature for all.

Nature offers nourishment and beauty, fulfilling all needs of human beings.

Humans have an obligation to preserve nature and live peacefully together.

When these three aspects are in balance, harmony and prosperity prevail. Floating Leaf embraces this philosophy, committing to Bali’s environment, its people, and sustainable tourism. We exemplify true sustainable living without compromising luxury or convenience

GIVING BACK

Floating Leaf isn’t just a retreat; it’s an educational facility. We grow alongside our community, guided by their support.

We strive to give wholesome and holistic support back. Learn more about some of our community assistance programs here.

The Perfect Location

Floating Leaf’s story began long before its doors opened in 2012. A decade earlier, the land was purchased and generously donated to the village to grow whatever crops they need the most. This act of community support remains at the heart of our mission—to bring prosperity to our Balinese neighbors while preserving the sacred land we operate on. Every phase of construction and planning adhered strictly to Balinese tradition and culture.

Business Setup

The owner, Putu, completed the arduous journey–obtaining all of the permits, permissions, and certificates to build and operate her eco-retreat. It took two years, countless headaches, and the patience of Gandhi. But their commitment to the laws, the community, and doing this the right way was unwavering.

They engaged with the local village, actively participating in village life and supporting the banjar (local village organization).

Permission From The Gods

When a new building or temple is to be built in Bali, several ceremonies are held to purify and harmonize the environment, humans, and gods. They decide the day for the ceremonies with their Pemangku (village priest) and traditional offerings of flowers, bamboo, holy water (tirta), and fruits were prepared.

The Ngeruak Karang ceremony expressed gratitude to the land and all it has provided from the previous years as a rice field. Now, permission is sought for a new purpose—a home fostering learning and growth.

The next ceremony was to honor Dewi Sri, the rice Goddess. Granting permission to relocate from rice fields to the village temple. The last ceremony was the Banten Nasarin, where the Pemangku wraps the bricks in white cloth and anoints them with holy water—sealing the foundation.

Breaking Ground

In late December 2011, the breaking ground ceremony unfolded. Our team labored to create a unique and environmentally conscious structure. Each room, the Yoga Sanctuary, Healing Pool, Melati Spa, kitchen, and gardens were meticulously designed for eco-friendliness, comfort, and visual appeal. Art, science, and Balinese tradition converged, making Floating Leaf a model of sustainable living within a traditional Balinese village.

First Guests

With hearts full of pride and gratitude, FLER welcomed its inaugural guests. Each individual who walked through our doors became part of our story—a cherished connection that endures to this day.

An Award Winning Retreat

It’s been 5 years since we first opened for business and we’ve all grown since then, both in expected and unexpected ways.

Our commitment to the local community has deepened, fostering prosperity for our Balinese neighbors. We’ve witnessed marriages, births, and personal hardships, standing by our staff as more than colleagues—they’re family.

We’ve also fully learned that sustainable living is more than a philosophy—it’s our daily practice. From eco-friendly materials to rainwater harvesting, we walk the talk. Our structures blend art, science, and Balinese tradition, creating a harmonious retreat within the village.

And then there are the awards—the recognition that humbles us. From Harper’s Bazaar’s Top 100 Worldwide Hotels to Huffington Post’s #1 Yoga Retreat in Bali, we’re honored. But perhaps our favorite award comes directly from you—our cherished guests. Your heartfelt feedback on platforms like TripAdvisor and Google warms our hearts and fuels our passion.

To each guest who has stayed with us: You’ve touched us profoundly, and for that, we are eternally grateful. When you return, it won’t just be a stay—it’ll be a reunion. A chance to serve you once more, with the same warmth and dedication that defines Floating Leaf.
